Hey LD,
Clicked on the link and it just wouldnt load completely for me...this damn pos webtv...need a real computer.
Just wanted to say good luck tracking it down...hope its just the balancer and not something internal.
:)
Re: Harmoinc Balancer or other problem? Video inside (ld85)
It does sound bad. Almost like there are peices of something in a cylinder just banging away. I would not think it would be something like a balancer causing the noise, unfortunately.
Re: Harmoinc Balancer or other problem? Video inside (ld85)
I have to vote for a rod bearing at this point. Try pinning it down to 1 or 2 cylinders by disconnecting and grounding each plug wire one at a time to seef if the noise goes away or gets softer.

I have the car on a lift and am taking off the oil pan. It is for sure at the rear of motor in the block. I will have the pan off by this evening and will post some pics.
Can new rod bearings be put on without pulling the heads?
I would think so as long as the cylinder walls are not torn up.(?)
Re: Harmoinc Balancer or other problem? Video inside (ld85)
I can't tell a lot about the video because I don't know what 'normal' sound is for your engine. Is it the constant knock you are talking about or the irregular rattling around noise?
If it's the irregular rattling, has anyone suggested a converter breaking up. When my converter started going, I thought I had a rod knocking at first. Sounded like it was coming from the passenger side on my LT1. Just something to check.
Re: Harmoinc Balancer or other problem? Video inside (ld85)
Well I am hearing two sounds. One is kind of tinny sound like something slapping metal to metal and the other sound is a deeper rod knock sound.
The balancer could be causing the tinny sound and since the rubber is coming out then it sure is bad.If that was a rod slapping inside it wouldn't be such a tinny sound. When you push in the clutch does the noise change?
Take a screw driver and put ear to handle and touch screw driver all along the block and the bell housing. It's possible you have a clutch or mass flywheel coming apart.Did you watch the balancer while engine was running? When you built rpm did you see the balancer wobble?
I got the popcorn out now. gotta see what you find next in pandoras box.
You would be surprised how the screw driver will put you in the right area.

Well I just got the pan off and there are some semi curved flat chips of reasonable size and a lot of silver and black oil,,, like something has been honed in the oil. I will get cleaned yup and try to sift thru the oil "with the wife’s strainer" or a paper towel and take some pixs.
I got under the car and had the wife turn the car on before I started and the noise was internal to the block for sure on the rear passenger side. With so much debris in the pan it appears a bearing ahs come loose.
I am no expert just a guy with no fear and some tools. What should I be looking for?
BTW, When the clutch is in our out it still makes the noise.
At this point I am ready to rebuild the motor if I can do it in the car thru the winter. I would likely have the heads done, install a new cam, rings and hone the cylinder walls. Baby-doll just may be down for the fall. :cry
Any suggestions? Should I pull the heads? I’ll post the shavings pix in @ an hour.
Re: Harmoinc Balancer or other problem? Video inside (ld85)
Looks and sounds too familiar! :(
Just pull my '84 with 39K orginal miles apart for a loud deep rapping and found pieces like yours.
You'll want to see if the mains have spun also - often #3 & 4 mains will take out #5 & 6 rod. When the spin the cut off oil to the adjacent rods, thus the metal to metal contact on the rod brgns.
Check the block saddles to see if the mains gouged them.
I had to replace my block. Hey, I got a 4 bolt main and roller lifter block out of the deal!
Re: Harmoinc Balancer or other problem? Video inside (ld85)
Congratulations, you have just "blown up" your first engine....so to speak.
Although the pics area a little blurry, I believe you are holding pieces of some rod/main bearings in your hand. Yea, engine has to come out and go to the machine shop. Of course you already have some good plans to mod it up a bit. It'll be a good winter project for you. Great to see you don't mind turning a wrench. Stick with the forum and you'll get a lot of help through your rebuild.
Re: Harmoinc Balancer or other problem? Video inside (ld85)
Looks like you will be pulling the engine. If you put an engine back together even if you got by with only replacing rod and main bearings, which I doubt that you will, all that debris particles throughout the block will just get back into the oil and you will be down again in very short time.

Holy moly, now all the questions I have read so much about, 383 or 396, buy a new ZZ-motor? This will ltake some time (and money) to figure out. I have always wanted o put a big block in one of these things.
I wish I had been really going at it when it blew, but I think it was a down shift that may have done it in. Anyway, I should be built to be stronger so I will start to add up to options cost:U
Lost of questions to follow after my brain slows down!
Re: Harmoinc Balancer or other problem? Video inside (ld85)
I saw a lt1 aluminum block/ heads in paper for 1500.I think in the long run you will be better off buying a crate motor for the bucks.Shoot you are up there by lingenfelters so have him build ya an engine.
I have a tendency as most vette drivers have of matting it and I figure I will be pulling my pan and check the rod/main bearings this winter.I read somewhere that running a stock L98 over 5800 rpm will crater it.Well I know I've been there more than a few times.I find it hard to baby a vette.
But like they say"if ya play ya pay".
Well anyway doing your own work is quite gratifying when you hear it run again.
