Last week a fellow member was trying to find out how much power he could make on his L98. That had me wondering what could be done to the LT1. What kind of head / cam package can be put on a stock displacement LT1 that gets on cam at 3k to redline and STILL can pass Dallas emissions and still be reliable to drive daily? Just looking for motor mods only and the exterior needs to stay stock in appearence (personal preference) 100hp over stock would be nice to start.
LT4 hotcam, port your stock heads or switch to LT4 heads/intake, 1.6 R/R's and a custom chip will get you close to an extra 100 HP. Actually, there is a deal at gmpartsdirect for the LT4 heads/intake, Hot Cam, R/R's and gaskets for $2100.
There are other ways to get there too. I know an LT4 intake hardly looks stock in appearance from the LT1, but red isn't such a bad thing is it??? :)
AFR heads (carb legal), custom chip, cam change.....takes $$$ to make time up in the LT1.
Read all about it on my web page in the link below.
Problem is it won't pass emissions, but it would if you rigged up some bullet cats. The question is does Dallas do a visual inspection or just a sniffer test? It will pass the sniffer with some bullet cats, but if they start looking for CARB numbers it won't happen. Kinda sucks to me. If my car passes the sniffer test better than some hoopty, but doesn't have a CARB number, how can that be illegal? If it clears emissions, it clears, what does it matter what parts it has?
BTW, looking at my pics you may notice I have a red intake. Only because I want it that way, it's the stock 92 intake that I had powder coated.
Dallas county does use the sniffer test. But now they have revised the test, so I don't know how the test is. They've also restricted the "Joe Schmoe" inspection spots (ie: tire shops, paint & body, etc.) from doing the test.
According to the GMPP online catalog, they describe the hotcam as "for off highway use". Can it still pass the sniffer?
They won't gaurantee that it will pass, but it's been proven many times that it will. Just get the computer programmed really well, it will work for ya.
Ed Wright who did my computer won't gaurantee that it passes emissions, but on the hot cam he's got it tuned well enough that it certainly should.
They say that in an effort to cover their behind but people run more aggressive cams and still pass. The cool part about the LT4 is that it didn't even have EGR. There is enough overlap in the cam to make it redundant. The Hot Cam has enough overlap to get by without it as well.
