Default LT1 engine pull

Can the LT1 in a 1995 be pulled out without pulling the manual 6 speed transmission? Piston pin bore in #8 piston is bad now. The pan is off at this time. New LT4 396 to be installed soon. Thanks

yes, it can; support the transmission and unbolt the transmission from the bell housing; do not try the (more conventional) method of unbolting the bell housing from the block.

I think you'll have one heck of time getting it all back in and lined up. Just getting the ZF back into the bellhousing while doing a clutch is a PITA.

My gut feeling is you may be able to get it out without pulling the transmission but you will not be able to put it back in so you should pull it now because in the long run it will save you time.

Boy you just havent had good luck with that one have you?
With the others probably just easier to pull it all at once
Upside is way easier to reinstall!

A lot of good advice here; but back to your original question; separate the trans from the bellhousing; when it's time to reassemble, find at least two, and as maybe as many as all four, long capscrews with the same o.d. and thread pitch as the factory bellhousing to transmission bolts, cut the heads off them and thread them into the bellhousing to serve as guide pins for the mating up of the transmission to the bellhousing. Since the guide pins keep everything aligned, the transmission input shaft should go into the clutch disc and pilot bearing with a minimum of hassle.

Default Engine pull

Thank you all for the great info here. I haven't decided which way to go yet but I have time now. I was going to compete in the Big Bend Open Road Race but that is out for sure now. Thanks again
