The GM specification booklet for the '93 states that the exhaust system is ALUMINIZED STAINLESS STEEL. Those of you who have attached a magnet to the piping know that the magnet will remain there without your support. In conversation with the BORLA rep at the MONTEREY DEL ORO vettefest, I was informed (and we all know) that there are varying degrees of stainless steel. Does any member know the stainless number, or specification, of the exhaust system? And what longevity the aluminizing provides?
Don't know all the answers, but my stock exhaust has been laying outside in the yard since January through the rain and snow and it hasn't turned colors or rusted out or anything like that. There might be some critters living in there.
I'm not sure what the stock exhaust is made of. Typically either 409 or T304 stainless steel is used to make exhaust systems. 409 is most commly used due to it's low cost. 304 has a little better corrosion resistance and asthetics.
I do know however there is no such thing as "aluminized" stainless steel. Stainless can be passivated which is not a protective coating but a treatment that removes any free iron particles from the surface.
"AK Steel is the only U.S. producer of aluminized 409 stainless steel, and currently holds two process patents for making the product, as well as the licenses on other product and process patents relating to the product."
