I bought a 700R4 from a forum member ( :seeya ) and I read in another thread that there were different spline configurations and some guy ended up buying a TC that he couldn't use... I wanna make sure that I learn from his mistake :D
On the shaft in the FRONT of the tranny (is this called the input shaft?) there is a thin splined section on the most forward end of the shaft and there is a thicker splined section on the section of the shaft that is closer to the case of the tranny (I hope that makes sense). On the thin section on the end, I count 30 teeth, does that sound right? Am I counting teeth on the correct section of the shaft?
I need to go ahead and buy a TC soon and I want to make sure I buy the correct part. This transmission came out of an '85. The person I bought it from said that it was in his car when he bought it and it was supposed to have been recently rebuilt. I know that sometimes tranny shops will just swap the old tranny for one that they have rebuilt and then rebuild the one they just took out later. This is why I don't just want to buy a TC assuming that I have whatever spline configuration was used in 1985, ya dig?
Also, would it be a bad idea to maybe try to find a stock TC in good shape from someone who upgraded to a high perf TC? Or would it just be better to get a new one from a local parts store? All I need is stock.
The larger part you are looking at holds the stator............. if you only need a stock converter I would get one from a shop that has remans........ not too expensive and it may have been upgraded........there were some that had problems breaking the stator inside the converter
:seeya
I think the year of the Tranny determines how many splines it has.
That is correct. The 82-86 700R4 had the 27 spline, unless it was updated by a factory repair ( which was pretty common considering that was the part most often broken in the early models ).
You can change an early style pump/stator/input housing for the late style and use a 30 spline converter...which is the recommended thing to do anyway.
Heck, I don't even know if you can still get 27 spline parts.
