Default performance cam

my brother has an '89 vette, and wants to know if it is possible to install a performance cam with slightly modified duration {to get the race type lumpy idle sound} without a lot of other mods.

It is definitely possible. All he needs is "too much" overlap and he'll get "that sound" he's looking for. Comp even has a line of cams developed specifically for "the sound". It's their "Thumpr" series, I believe.

Be careful how much duration you use or it won't function with the EFI. 230 / 236 and a 112 LSA is about as far as one should go and will require custom tuning. 224 / 230 would even be a better choice. Now, the stock TPI manifold is designed for low end power. Therefore a more appropriate cam choice would be 212 / 218 on a 112 or 218 / 224 on a 112 to work with the stock intake. There's a lot more to digest than just a big rowdy cam.

Completely.

I think that your brother is a bit misguided in his goal....but you asked the question.

that's pretty close to an LT4 Hot Cam; 0.525 lift with 1.6 rockers; 0.492 lift with 1.5 rockers on a 112 degrees lobe angle

with the rest
Lumpy cams steep gears etc may sound good or be std fare for lots of cars but quite the opposite of the TPI.
