Default Technical Question, but off topic. Would this work?

This is somewhat technical, somewhat humorous, and somewhat off topic. If it needs to be moved to off topic I fully understand.

I'll start off with a question. Is there any reason why this setup wouldn't fire the spark plug when the pushbutton is pressed, assuming the spark plug is threaded into something metal.

You're trying to put it in the tail pipe aren't you? you crazy bastard. LOL, I'm sure it WOULD work...I'd like to have such a setup like that..for an ALARM though! So when they tried to steal my car...50k volts RIGHT to them!
BTW: Why would you need the coil? Battery voltage should be sufficient.

Nathan,

You & me MUST be twins seperated at birth. I have been working on EXACTLY the same idea for the tail pipes :D I think spitting fire out the tail end would be oh so  On command mind you !!!

Actually it's not related to the car one little bit. Although I have thought about it before. I'm actually trying to improve a friend's current system.

It involves some PVC pipe, propane, good ole NAUWS and a potato.

Yup, he made a nitrous potato gun, he says it makes a HUGE difference. Now I'm just trying to make a BETTER nitrous potato gun.

His system currently is just a standard gun. It has a barrel and a chamber area. As such you have to open the chamber, add your fuel, close the chamber and then somehow ignite it. Oh, and it's hand held. He's had very good results using propane as his fuel. Nitrous works on the exact same principal as it does in the car, all the extra air does wonders.

Except in this case a "100 shot" refers to how many extra yards we hope to obtain with it.

I'm looking at something that is much more complicated, but much safer and should have a greater range as well.

Looks cool. Couldn't you just use one of those gas grill ignitor's? Only about $10 at any hardware or home labyrinth type of store, and you wouldn't need a battery. Oh yeah, remember to close the gap some when using NOS, probably should go with NGK TR5 instead of TR55  .

Nitrous does not burn, it just helps the fuel to burn.

Just use the coil and a cap from an old-style ignition; it will discharge when you OPEN the sw.

And please give an observer your password so he/she can post the results of your next experiment.

Exactly, and it helps it burn very well in this particular case.

You could use a gas grill ignitor, but I want something that I can fire from a very good distance, and it's just not as cool!

If we use an iron chamber instead of plastic we can do some cool things. First we can use the spark plug for ignition, eliminating having to open it up. Now we just have to introduce or fuel. This is where the fogger nozzle comes into play. If we plumb our propane and nitrous into a wet shot style fogger nozzle that is threaded into the chamber we suddenly have a chamber that doesn't have to have any openings other than the barrel. As such we can introduce much more fuel and juice into the chamber and be much safer than the PVC system in the process.

Also with my upgraded ignition system I can wire up a VERY remote firing control just in case we get TOO gready.

A battery doesn't have sufficient voltage to make a spark plug spark. :)

Weve got the standard potato gun,it uses a screw on cap to put hair spray in, & the grill igniter.
I'd say it shoots hard enough. An average potato will go 200 yards+.Theres no acurracy to it.
What would be cool is to go smaller, how about a grape pistol?

You need a .05 Mfd capacitor across the switch. A capacitor from an old points type distributor is perfect.

Hey guys I'm trying to make this safer. Right now my friend has a hand held gun that he is firing with some kind of fuel and nitrous. At least I'm looking at something remotely fired!

Also I'm looking at cast iron, worst case scenario we blow the barrel clean out of the gun. With the current design your worst case involves plastic debries embedded in skin.

Trust me guys, if we do actually make this thing it will be had with safety in mind, and it will also be fired into an empty test field, a good mile from the nearest person. The area surrounding the chamber will be enclosed in several layers of deadening material, including plywood, metal sheeting, more plywood, and large air pockets. The blast shield will be more trouble than the gun.

Remote firing will be done from quite a distance and behind a rather solid concrete wall. Trust me guys, as fun as it would be it's not worth getting hurt over.

The basic theory is very much proven, I'm just looking to beef up the design a little bit for more power, but increase strength tenfold over the power increase. Too much power and it's just wasted. Once the projectile leaves the barrel any further explosion is pretty much wasted.

i wish I had a way to load pics :D I've got a pitsol, but grapes can't take the velocity ceated by this thing!!!  I'm tried paint *****, very messy! acorns, just once in a while one makes it! marbels, 50/50 on breaking or actually holding up, I did use ball bearings a couple of times, BUT HEY RICOCHET....BIG TIME!!!  I've recently found some plastic ***** ,used for plastic injection machine, and these seem to flatten out on impact, but you have no idea of where they are headed when they leave the gun!!!   I machined this at work with the plan of using compressed air, but of couse a little starting fluid and a grill igniter would be better! The bore of the barrel is .500 dia.X 8" long, but I've got a "chamber" for the "air" and it is .750diaX 1 1/2"long with a .250dia.holeX .375long between the two! It's not all that loud, don't kick much, but she sure throw a wicked flame!! Kids, don't try this at home.....

I guess the nitrous helps with high compression potato detonation.

I was going to suggest connecting several coils together to get a really huge (measured in feet) spark but you guys have some interesting stuff going on already.
