I too mounted my MSD 6AL box under the driver's side headlight on my '86.
I ordered my MSD from TPIS, and ordered the 'harness' too.
This made for a easy hook-up/connection, and the performance difference was ever so noticeable. Lots and lots of spark from that MSD box.
I suggest mounting under the headlight...because it's so much 'cooler' in that location, versus higher up in the engine bay. Electronics, do not like heat, and over time are prone to fail because of it.
Do ya'll recommend intalling one on an LT4? I have mine from my 90 sitting in my tool box waiting to be used. I know it worked great with HEI, (it even firmed up my tach needle. Bonus!) but do they work well with opti?
It won't hurt any car you install it on. I do know that the LT4 used a different coil so the "quick" adapter probably won't connect to your coil, meaning you would have to do some cutting and splicing.
MSD is in the process of making a LT4 style coil, when they do that I imagine they will also market a quick connector like they do for the LT1.
I love my digital 6. However the only reason I really bought it was because I was too cheap to try and find a seperate tach lead for my shift light!
I put my digital 6 under the driver's side headlight.
Geez isn't that awfully far away for wiring, etc? I put mine on the pass side diag frame brace and ran the wires right along the hood release cable for 2 feet to the distributor. Dropped the power lead straigt down to the starter thru a fusible link; grounded to the hood latch.
Pretty much have to put it up front. The thing is though that the coil and such is also up front. The only wire I had to make any longer was the power wire and I brought that directly from the positive terminal behind the battery. I didn't really have any wire heavy enough, so I used two strands of what I had, that's plenty heavy. I was actually able to shorten the ground because I have my own ground distribution block mounted where the AIR pump used to be.
The wires going to the coil are just about the perfect length.
