Soooo... let's just say a man with an original stock '84 exhaust bought some muffler deletes. Let's also say that the man wants to install said muffler deletes on said '84. Now let's also say that he has removed the muffler hanger bolt and the U-clamp. How does said man remove said muffler???
I beat it with a rubber mallet, then I tried using a flat head screwdriver with the rubber mallet, then I went to a 3lb sledge. Couldn't get the muffler to budge. Any advice?
Thanks!!!
One more thing, the pipes aren't really corroded or rusted. They look old, but not rusted out or anything.
The U-clamps have deformed the pipes so you will not be able to pull them apart, you know that already. If you are very careful, you can cut the outer (muffler) pipe lengthwise with a cutoff wheel in a Dremmel tool and split/spread the opening with a chisel and get the mufflers off. Don't cut into the Y pipe or you will have an exhaust leak. It is a lot easier to buy a new Y pipe!
Try squirting inside the joint with WD-40 or other penetrating oil. Start out by getting some movement in the joint; twist, torque, push and pull. If you get some movement, keep at it. Putting a wood block under the joint and leaning on the muffler will help loosen things up. Hopefully with all the movement, the flange will expand and the muffler will wiggle out. I've done this many times. As Z51 said, if the pipe is too badly crushed, cutting may be your only answer.

With both just be Careful with trying to twist and loosen, you don't want to crack the weld by the collector. If you have access to a set of torches you could glow them a bit to help loosen.
