C4 brake upgrade
I don't care what you all buy.
You all are thinking C5z06 calipers or something other then Base C5 Calipers.
The Base calipers are almost identical to the J55 calipers. It NOT WORTH THE MONEY.
and HE DOESNT NEED MORE BRAKES!.
If he was doing 10 track days a year instead of 1 and he was trying to get the best possible race car I would have said to get C6Z06 calipers or Baer or Wilwood. As for wheels size who wants to race on 17" wheels. You would want to go to 18" wheels anyway better tire price and selection. No one cares about $200 set of 18" wheels when your spending $1800 on tires. He's not doing 10 track days, Really... 1 or 2 track days a year means get better pads, lines and fluid. I know 3 C4 Corvettes with Hawk, or Carbotech pads on stock calipers, steels lines, and Motul fluid. Not one of them is complaining. All 3 of them have better stopping then street tires will allow.
HE HAS THE J55 CALIPERS, no one told him to buy them. That would be a waste of money as well.
If the J55 calipers fail then sure look at getting C5Z06 calipers. Then it makes more sense.
If you dont have the factory J55 set up then yes... find some C5 ZO6 and upgrade.
Don't waste the time, energy or money on Base C5 calipers. Get your hands on a some.
I have both in my garage. They are so similar its stupid to argue about.
--------------------------
Actually... OP, I will buy your J55 calipers. Im having issues with one of mine.
Hell... how about a trade? I have C5 calipers and they are nothing special. I'm willing to trade you
some pointless C5 calipers for your hard to find great working J55 calipers. Then I will put C6Z06 calipers on my C5.
Have to wait till the C5 gets back from the shop. I don't have access to the calipers at the moment.
The C5 new are $54.00 the C4 J55 are $140.00, I will trade.
BTW; I agree with you that the OP doesn't need "more brakes", and that pads and fluid would do it. I took exception to your statement that a C5 brake upgrade wasn't a meaningful upgrade and not worth the money over a base C4 brake set up. I disagree with that. I also disagree with your differentiation of a "base C5 caliper" and a "C5 Z06 caliper" and a "C6 [base] caliper upgrade" over a C5 caliper. The C5 base, C5 Z06 are the same caliper except for paint, and the C6 is the same except for the "Corvette" script and slightly more material making very slightly stiffer.

I was mistaken on C5 Z06 your right there basically the same. The good brakes are on C6 zo6.
I'm having an off day. Went back and read. It wasn't the op that mentioned J55. It was someone else later.
If he doesn't have J55 then there will be a lot more improvement in C5 parts.
I still would not spend the money. I would get C6.
Sorry guys... Read to fast.

as far as pads go, try RaceBrakes in Melbourne also, they do pads that work from 0 degrees, I use them for hillclimb and they work pretty well, they make their own stuff, but sell discs etc too.

my suspension is a bit of a mish/mash, I bought a complete Z51 suspension (84/85 springs and sway bars) from corvette connection, but have since put Flaming River double adjustable coilovers (from Summit Racing) on the front.
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts

double adjustable shock coilovers work well at the track, much more control especially over a bumpy surface.
part of that would be due to separate bump and compression adjustment.
as far as driving on the road with coilovers, you cant really tell the difference. you can get a smoother ride by using less bump and compression settings. but you could achieve that by using double adjustable shocks with leaf springs.
coilovers give greater chassis adjustment, you can set your chassis heights exactly where you want them.
to be honest, I couldnt pick the difference between 450 lb springs and 600 lb springs on the road !
setting up the swaybar requires more time and money with coilovers too, you will need to go to rodends, especially in early c4.
I drove the car on the road for 4 months with the coilovers without an issue, but the first time at the track it bent both female 7/16" swaybar rodends, and thats just a reminder of how much harder a car is pushed at the track and how much extra stress is put on components.
depends what you want to do ?
