I usually used a large pair of channel locks to remove oil filters. A few times I've had to resort to driving a screw driver through both sides of the filter and use it as a lever to get them off.

Stab a long screwdrivers through it and turn it off, get ready for scalding hot oil to drench your arm and hands. Gets em off every time.

We all think Walmart is a big pile of cheap garbage, but it's not true in the end. Every once in a while, an unexpected jewel is found.

One near me has 12 quart cases of Mobile One, about $5 a quart. Surprising, no?

Surface area is your friend when it comes to stubborn oil filters. Use a strap wrench and a cup style at the same time, you'll need a helper most likely, but the filter wont crush. The screwdriver deal take too much time and you can still not end up getting it off and be left with the base staring at you.
