Don't really know where to begin...had trans repaired...got car back and distributor was loose...took a while to find out why it wouldn't run right. Took note of harmonic balancer & I think it's been changed...for example the solid portion is way inset of the timing teeth..can't read w/o scribing the line all the way to center of balancer..ok - tried to time at spec 6 degrees BTDC and line fluctuates all over the place...when I get it @ 0 degrees and give a little gas, sounds like the right (passenger side bank) rattles as if valves were hitting pistons...if I return to way retarded (20+ degrees) seems to get quieter and doesn't smoke out of the right precat...never knew there was a leak there before...
Hints please......is it possible that someone has changed the harmonic balancer and the timing marks are not correct....is some sort of 'knock' sensor kicking-in...do I have valve train problems I should check into?
Man, I have never heard the likes of this noise before.
Any help, please and I can get lengthy on description if need be.
Scorp, I dont know but it is not consistent with anything I have ever seen...is it possible that the rubber between the balancer halves could have split and allowed the outside to shift toward the block? Maybe I should remove it tomorrow and look...Plus, I just tried to retime everything and I can't readily find the mark...maybe it's spinning (shifting)?
My real concerne now is the rattle (knock) on the right bank....sorta like valves banging pistons after a short rev and deceleration.
Yup, the balancer is shot...the inner and outer rings are spinning seperately-don't drive it till you replace it-it can rub a hole thru your timing chain cover...(been there done that!!)

Re: Timing problem plus on 87 Roadster (BCinPhx)
Silly question, I know, but did you disconnect the ECM wire when setting your timing? If you don't, you won't get a true setting....of course if you have, please disregard my 2 cents worth :) :)
