Default Engine knock - not a personal issue

I just want to know exactly what a knock sounds like...I know it's a result of lean mixture or bad timing, which I'm running a little rich and timing's good, so I'm not in trouble... but I would like to know if it's very detectable and what it sounds like (ie. a knock!?). One of the reasons I'm asking is I'll probably set my fuel pressure at 36 psi to see if I can cure my rich problem and want to make sure I don't lean too much.

It's kind of a metallic pingin' noise...but by the time you hear it you could be damaging a piston....do you have access to a scan tool? It will show knock retard in degrees-that should give you an idea of where it's at. Are you talking it's lean at wot? or cruise conditions? BLM's?

Sounds like a metallic rattling from up front. As above though, your best bet would be to use a scan tool instead of your ear. I'd be looking at your O2 readings for an indication if you were too rich or lean.

Pinging can easily be heard if you run cheap bad gas. Usually won't happen while cruising but under load you'll hear a muffled metallic tapping out front. It's just real hard to describe, you've just got to hear it.

Now what you hope you never hear is rod knock. That sounds like somebody is beating a your block with a sledge.
