Default Engine temp

For what it is worth, I changed my T-stat to a 180 deg Hypertech and wow the overall average temp of my car according to the digital gauge is reading 12-14 deg lower. I read a low of back and fourth on this but bottom line it works. I now see temps at 182 on the pkway.

A $3 180 temp stat from Auto Zone would have done the same.

I tried a GM and no joy. This one opens at 180 and seems fully open shortly thereafter. $21 at autozone through my car club.

Thermostats are quite a mystery. I usually boil them to see if they really open and close before I install. I think this is a wise policy since I had 2 duds in a row. IIRC, one opened but wouldn't close, the other wouldn't open.

THIS one for $11.99?

What was the difference? They are both 180 degree thermostats.

Don't know. I did call Hypertech first and the 1022 was what they recommended. I was trying to get a Hypertech programmer to lower the fan turn on temp but they are discontinued and they did not recommend buying one do to possible malware or firmware issues. Turns out that with the 180 stat it is not needed.

The Hyperjunk stuff won't really help with much. Try THESE people and see if they can do anything for the car. Turning on the fan/fans earlier would probably be something they can tack on to the base tune. I have heard of malware but not on a programmer. If it comes from the factory, how does it have any malware? Of course, now that they don't sell it, they will advise against it.
