Hey guys and gals, the vette is in the shop getting the tranny problem fixed. It turned out to be the PROM and ECM. Since I have to replace the PROM anyway, I was going to upgrade, as is in us car peoples blood anytime we have to fix something. So I was looking at the Hypertech chips out of Eckler's and I was debating about Stage 1 or Stage 2. I was wondering if any of you have done this to an L98 and if the Stage 2 with the 160 degree thermostat is worth the extra time and money. I would love to hear your opinions also. Thanks, and keep on 'Vetting!
From what I hear, there are far better on the market. Ie: Ed Wright Fastchips, Superchips, and Jet to name a few. Hopefully someone here can give you better info!! :D
I had the stage 2 in my 86 along with the 3 in exhaust from Mid America and cut the box out, and shift kit and this seemed to wake it up nicely. If my memory recalls i was running high 13's in the 1/8 @ 80 to 85 - No it wont lift the front end but when you got into it - it was there!!! b/t/w i never changed the thermo to 160 and never had a problem with running the other side of 210-218-
This is my "opinion". As you can see in my sig. I have an 88 also. Hat's off to you for a cool year. Anyway, I had installed the ADS Superchip and did the 160 thermo. The stat was a nice cool down. Definitely worth it. At first the chip "seemed like I had more off the line, which was kinda true, it adds timing. My high rpms did suffer though. After 2 years of that thing, I started reading the posts on this forum. Got me learning and understanding much more about my car. to the Corvette Forum Members! I finally put my original prom back in, and adjusted my tps properly. The tps was at .48 volts I believe. Bumped it up to .62 volts. "My car" runs, idles, and has more power throughout the entire rpm band now, without the Superchip. This might not work for everyone else, but for me it did. I have never used a Hypertech chip, but I'll assume it to be the same as the ADS before I spend the $150+ on it. I'd rather wait until my car is modded to my liking, then have a custom chip burned to make use out of them. Like I said my opinion only.

Do not buy a hypertech chip, its an expensive fan switch.
Any gains you get are from the massive timing it gives to the engine, which you can do yourself. Actually, no one has ever produced dyno results on a stock motor that show an improvement of hypertech vs. stock.
If you want a chip burned, contact C. Marcho (marcho polo in the ECM section) and he can make you one that does the same thing for much less than they hypercrap.
I have the stage 2 (Thermomaster) in my '89 as well as the 160 thermostat. The reduced temps are nice, but there's cheaper ways to do that. The chip itself... well, it made a difference, but it was minimal. I wouldn't buy it again. The results from the "free mods" are better than this chip by a long shot.
The guys have it right:
-keep the stock chip
-bump the TPS base to .65Vdc
-bump base timing, as possible without knock counts
-install a 160deg stat and aux fan sw and wire the sw to the main fan relay
-install an AFPR to tune fuel to air at WOT
In addition, lose the "frisbee" from your water pump pulley and cut back your spark plug ground electrodes for some nice free power gains.
