Well, that's pretty much the size of it; the MAF is a Mass Air Flow sensor; it does not control air flow.

It measures the mass of air flowing through the intake in gm/sec. The L98 MAF has a range of 0-255gm/sec. It measures the mass of air flowing across several heated wires.

As more air flows the wires cool and more current is required to maintain constant temp.; it's this current (or dirving voltage) increase that is a direct measure of air flowing across the sensor wires.

These wires must be kept clean as contaminents tend to insulate the wires from the air flow and produce false readings. To this end, the L98 uses a burn-off circuit that passes a high current through the sensor wires for about 2sec after the engine is shut off. This is enough to burn off any contaminents and assure the MAF gives correct air flow readings.

I hope this is the info you were looking for.

This is a simplification but there is a heated wire in there. Moving air cools it. This factor is measured and tells the computer how much air is flowing into the motor. The computer then takes other factors such as engine temp, throttle setting etc. and then tells the injectors how much fuel to throw at the motor.

Those are five fins for the heat sink to keep the electronics cool. There story goes that the General added them after one MAF failed during testing in Death Valley heat.

These are cut off flat when a MAF is gutted to increase potential air flow.

I just got a new GM MAF off of Ebay. On it the inside looks much different and also the screens have a definite honeycomb shape. My old screens looked like they came off a screen door.

Does the new MAF have the sensor wires inside the round tube?

Watch Ebay. There is some guy that keeps selling new GM's for $75 Buy It Now. Just do a MAF search. They are the same for Trans AMs, Camaro's and Vettes

Yes inside. Some people cut the screens out. They claim to get more air that way. Other people say the screens keep the air flowing straight through so you get a better reading. Who knows.
