I think I may have figured out what my problem was with the studs.
My process cleaning out the holes consisted of running a fluted head bolt in and out with some WD-40 (to soften and collect the sealant?) and then some carb cleaner. I then vacuumed out the holes with a shop vac, and lastly blew compressed air through them to fully dry them and remove any residual traces of the carb cleaner.
When I vacuumed the first hole out, it started sucking out coolant even though I'd drained as much as would come out. So for whatever reason, draining the coolant at the radiator leaves a ton of coolant in the top of the block, meaning I had likely been trying to seal those studs with the threads immersed in coolant. Live and learn. I'll start it tonight and hopefully the leaks will be gone.

hylomar on the head gasket. if u ever use hylomar, buy the REAL stuff and folliw directions to a t.
is used in aviation by rolls royce as a gasket sealer. by ferrari and lambo as a gasket sealer. in oldschool aviation and motorcycles, hylomar was used with silk thread between two flat metal surfaces.
its tremendous stuff. i researched the bejesus out of it. the best part, if u have ever cleaned old gasket material, i did every gasket on my 85, there is ni ckeanuo with hylomar.
