This topic is something i have been wondering about and has had me worried , i do not have to worry about it this year but my 96 will require a smog check next year, i have been told that my 383, hot cam, with 1.6 rr s will not pass because of more stringent emission testing, some say it can be tuned to pass but get conflicting opinions on that, so lets say worst case scenario is if it cannot be tuned to pass then i will have to replace the cam of different spec s or sell it to someone in another state. any opinions or advice would be appreciated...Ps. when i built this earlier this year i was told i would have no problems,, go figure,,,very confused.
Since all of those things are hidden you should pass the visible part. If it was me I'd try to make sure the exhaust was as quiet as possible and with some tuning to timing it might be possible to make it sound like a stock idle. If the cam doesn't have much overlap and you still have cats it should pass I would think.
i have all of the above, sometime in the near future i will make a test run with a smog station only and see how it does, right now i have some idle issues and running rich.
Do a pretest it doesnt go in the system
Theres a gentelman out by you whose a pretty good "in person" tune, Don Lorensen I beieve he can get it to pass for real.
Think this may be him http://www.top-downsolutions.com/dyn...with-air-tubes
look under "contact"
Louder than stock mufflers not a problem
Think smogs bad
Wait til caltrans passes its pay by the mile law....matter of time, this kids GONE.
They are already doing a "pilot program" ie "taking volunteers". Just wait..
I'm not sure, but I thought the new smog test in California required plugging into the obd port to ensure all systems are go and a visual check with to tailpipe sniffing. This went into effect a couple years ago and stations have been slow to adopt.

That is what they do in CT along with checking the gas cap. Never did a visual check.
They put the car on a dyno to simulate road conditions, as well as an idle check and visual check. If it's running too rich, you'll fail the test. Fail it 3 times, and you're a "gross polluter". To fix that, you'll have to go to a referee.
He lives in Diamond Bar, he's subject to all of the above.

x2 in 2013 they stopped the tailpipe sniffer test for cars 2000 and newer. Unfortunately you have a 96. I remember back a ways it was almost impossible to pass tailpipe test with a high lift cam.
Newer cars just have to pass ODB emmissions ready tests and a visual.
