Default A/C - no difference from Max to Reg??

1986 slide to set A/C. There is no difference between the regular air setting and the max setting. It used to blow with more oomph when I put it on max but now it doesn't make any difference. Any ideas??

Usually when you switch to max air all you are doing is switching from outside air to recirculating the inside air. There is a door in the system controlled by a vacuem actuator that controls this. The door could be stuck or the vacuem source at the door actuator could be missing/disconnected.The slide on the control unit directs vacuem to the actuators -/doors in the system.A vacuem gauge and some vacuem line splice connectors will help in troubleshooting. The door you want to check is on the passenger side air inlet for the system.

You mention that the door in on the passenger side air inlet? Where is it exactly?

When you're sitting in the passenger seat it's just to the right of your feet.
You can see it if you peek under the dash.

I am having the same problem, the door is on the passenger side you have to remove the under dash panel to see it. It has an orange vacuum line going to it. I can get the door to close if I apply vacuum directly to the diaphragm but not through the selector on the dash. If you guys fine out what it is please let me know.
