replaced front shocks
Tools required:
1.) 15 mm wrench
2.) 2 13MM sockets and 2 socket wrenches
3.) 10MM socket
4.) 7MM socket
5.) tool to hold shock in place while removing top nut of stock shock. Advance Auto stocks this - about 10 bucks.
6.) allen wrench (don't know exact size) to hold replacement shock in place while tightening top nut.
7.) Cold beverage - my choice was Spaten Oktoberfest.
Parts
1.) 2 Bilstein shocks.
Procedure - 2 to 3 hours depending on frequency of beverage breaks
1.) remove tire well plastic shrouds - use 10mm socket. On passenger side there are 2 - 7mm bolts that hold the coolant resevoir line in place.
2.) use shock absorber tool to hold the top of the shock in place while removing top bolt.
3.) remove lower bolts using 2 13mm sockets and socket wrenches. One for the bolthead, one for the nut underneath.
4.) compress shock and finagle it out.
5.) remove old bushings
6.) consume cold beverage
7.) position new shock so that you can slide the lower bolts in place. The bottom end must be anchored before fitting the top.
8.) compress new shock and fit into top fitting - make sure to have new mounting hardware in place.
9.) tighten bottom
10.) user allen wrench to hold new shock in place while tightening top bolt.
11.) consume cold beverage and proceed to other side.
Final comments:
The hardest part of this job is compressing the old and new shocks - blood, sweat and beers.
These are bilstein gas shocks and they don't like to move. Any ingenuity here will reap great rewards. Having 2 people for this part would help.
Reward - improved ride and handling
