Default targa top -- rear mount bracket adjust?

HI all, i've searched but don't have any answers yet.

I bought a new top for my 85, and i have run into a problem.

it appears that the new top is too "long"

in other words, when i get the front lined up, there is no way i can push the top town.

and vice versa, if i put the rear into the locators first, the top will not come down.

i've loosened off all the TOP brackets. and they are moved to the maximums to "shorten" it (front to back i mean). still not enough.

I pulled the small access panel off the front bracket and they appear to be positioned all the way forward with no shims.

so...

my question is what about the rear? I saw in a melrose writeup of how to correctly fit a new top that the rear plastic valence can be removed and THERE MAY POSSIBLY BE SHIMS THERE PUSHING the rear BRACKETs FORWARD toward the front of the car which is making the whole geddup too short for my new top to fit in.

has anybody found shims pushing those rear brackets forward?
that is a lot of screws, and alot of old brittle plastic for me to take out....id rather not if nobody on teh forum has ever found any shims pushing the bracket forward then i might as well not bother.

cheerio, VT.
