Default Steering column

New to vette ownership. Got me what seems to be a pretty decent 91 earlier this spring. Got the best I could for the budget I had to work with. I have what seems to be somewhat common from what I've read and that is the steering column that pulls down to the 7 o clock position from using the steering wheel as a handle to pull oneself in and out of the vehicle. Is this more of an annoyance or is there a safety issue here. Appears it could be a pricey fix.

The slop in the wheel is probably from the pivot pins and their bores wearing loose. There were a few forum members on here who made oversized pins to press in place of the originals to tighten the steering column back up. Not pricey if you do the work yourself but depends how much of a stomach you have for tearing the column apart to redo. A forum member named Gear Jammer did a DIY thread with pictures of his column rebuild. From a safety standpoint: usually want one of the few things in your control of avoiding collateral damage to be tight and precise.

I had a lot of slop and fixed it by replacing the left pin on the column. It is a cheap fix and now very solid, not hard to do just take your time.

This thread shows that you can use knuckles from other GM cars that are more plentiful and budget friendly than the ones available from Corvette vendors.

I would certainly try spending the $18 for the oversized pin before I spent the time/money to rebuild the column.

Not sure why anyone does that but I wouldn't.
