The lights (push buttons) to the right of the steering column (or the console - radio, HVAC, etc) do not work - instrument lights at the steering column (speed, tach, gauges) do work with the headlights switch AND only with the headlights switch - not when the power is on. So where do I start??
BTW the fuse is good and there's power where it goes in the fuse box.

BTW this is a '94.
And again to clarify - the tach and gauges light up ONLY with the power "ON" and the lights "ON" - light switch acts as it should.
Repeat - none of the push buttons light up for the HVAC, radio, etc. But when I "power up" all the items light up as they should at the "INFO" screen.
The light dimming is controlled by the CCM which gets a signal from the photo cell on the DIC. If I am understanding you the lights work when the parking or headlights are on. Points to the DIC photo cell. Try cleaning with a cue tip wetted with alcohol..
Is my problem unique - description not clear - or???
No it's not clear. The tach and analog gauges should not light up until the headlight switch is set to parking lights or headlights. The speedo should be lit all the time. The climate controls have a green light above each button. When you make a selection, the light above that button should turn on green... only that button. When the parking lights or headlights are on, each climate control button and the radio controls are lit.
None of the "back lights" work right of the steering wheel when I turn on the light switch.
If the conversation was restricted to the CLUSTER then I'd think burnt out bulb(s), bulb socket(s) or circuit board in the cluster. Here's an image from 8C of the cluster back-side so if right of column I'd think bulbs/sockets 18 - 19 - 20 for start.
Anything other than the cluster needs to be addressed and mentioned individually. You can't I don't believe just mention "lights out". It would be important to mention radio and the AC control separately.
