When i did mine i was also upgrading my camshaft and timing chain.
I did have to pull the front sway bar, and i also pulled the lower radiator support/tray.
I don't remember if the support was in the way or not, or if i pulled it for another reason.

Just recently changed my rack on my 96 and had to pull the AC compressor out of the way, pull the alternator, pwr steering pump and the bracket for them all to get on the line fittings of the rack. Also need to remove the sway bar to have room to remove the rack. About a 4 hour job if all goes well. Have fun.
