Default throttle body help, suggestions.

not sure if this should be here, or gen discussion. but here goes.

Im having an issue with my throttle body. my return spring is not working properly, and because of it my car idles around 1,500. which im not a fan of. I tried messing with the spring.. no go.. so i added an external spring to help it return.. and its a little better but not fixed, sitting at 1K now. obviously i can tighten this spring more, but it makes the gas pedal harder as well.

when doing other testing i noticed a very small vacuum leak coming from the tps housing.. (idle is not bouncing or anything)..

and the alan head screw between the two blades sticks out and moves side to side.. like it had an airfoil in it at one time, otherwise i dont know what thats there for.

So my question is, should l look into a rebuild? will the rebuilders replace the return spring? or should i just pick up a BBK one or something, although im guessing a larger throttle body on my fairly stock car will be of no addl benefit. thoughts? and if you reccommend a rebuild, anyone you reccommend?

TB for a what? There's multiple threads for rebushing the TB for smoother operation which would certainly "maybe" correct your issue - but could also be very dependent upon what you've already done.

sry, its an 86 TPI C4.

as of now all ive done it clean it out when i replaced the IAC a month ago, and mess with the spring, now that the return isnt functioning properly..

all the rebuild kits ive seen dont seem to be nearly complete.. if im gonna rebuild it i want it 100% otherwise why bother, right?.. rock auto has a rebuild service for $160, otherwise ive seen some aftermarket TB for like $220 and $320..

Vacuum leaks will play havoc with your idle. Loose screws on the TB are a no-no. Anything that comes loose and leaks will affect your idle. If you ingest it, it will cost you an engine.

The idle speed adjustment on the side is the base idle setting, but the idle speed is computer controlled via the Idle Air Control stepper motor.

I powder coated my TB and forgot the second spring when welding the arm back on it. It works fine. Although it is doubtful, if the issue is binding and it is so bad that the blades will not return to idle position? Someone may have had it apart and not reassembled it correctly. If that really is the case, it should come off the car and be inspected as it is a potential safety concern as well as a driveability issue.

imvho.

confab, hillarious icon BTW.

yeah i agree with you on all accounts, hence why im asking for thoughts suggestions...

the throttle blade is not fully returning to the idle stop.. if i open my hood and physically push it back the last 1/16inch to the stop it idles perfectly... its just not physically returning.

and yeah that bolt i was talking about is from an air foil somone removed.. yeah its tight in there.. although i should just remove it..

Try lubricating it with a spray silicone or Teflon based penetrating oil . Work the throttle with your hand while spraying the inside of the throttle body in the middle and on both ends of the shaft where it passes through the TB body casting .
