Default Track results....

Took my bone stock 96 CE to the track on Friday night, and boy was I surprised. With a granny launch of about 1800 rpm, I managed a 13.3 at 105.7, and that's with a crappy 2.02 60 foot. The weather was 92 degrees, 90% humidity, barometric pressure 29.87. Really bad for racing.

Here's why I'm surprised: my previous car, a 92 Mustang (alright, boo and hiss) was heavily modified, as in heads, cam, intake, gears, tons of stuff. Best I ever got was a 13.1 at 104, in really good weather.

I think my new Vette has 12's written all over it, as it sits! Between the weather and the poor launching, I think there's another 3 tenths in there somewhere. I love this new car!!!

Now you understand why we laugh at Mustangs. It takes so much just to make them keep up it's not even funny.

Yeah, I was at HRP. Best ET was 13.3, best MPH was 105.7. Not bad considering it has the original spark plugs in it!

I appreciate the feedback. No, I will never go back to a Mustang, because the Vette is just light years ahead of it. But let me say, I won't knock the Mustang either. It isn't meant to compete with the Vette. After all, I paid 17K for it brand new, and it only came with 215 hp stock. I think it's a great car for people who want something new and performance oriented, but can't afford a Vette. After all, I learned everything I know about cars on 3 Mustangs and a 440 'Cuda. Gotta start somewhere!

Kevin.....go easy on the Mustang......I know we are all Vette afficianados here but......

The Mustang is a great bang for the buck performance car. 85-93 Fox Body Mustangs are very sturdy , cheap , super easy to modify and have TONS of parts available for them. Dont forget (oh wait, you were born in 85) that they were KING in their day. A lightly optioned 87-93 LX Mustang coupe could put down 210 rwhp with a filter (no snorkel) and a good tune (advance the timing , good ole distributors, before your time ;) ) and with that and a 3100 lb weight full of fluids, run a low 14 sec 1/4 mile. That was enough to slaughter Camaros /Firebirds of the day and run right with most L98 Vettes costing WAY more. They gain big time with just bolt ons- getting them into the low 13's easily. Add some good heads and cam and they can be 12 second cars.

Sure there are those semi-lame performing heads/cam cars out there just as there are with our Vettes. But dont let that fool you. And remember , they are only working with 302 cid stock, not 350. The 302 Windsor is an excellent design and with all the right after market performance parts (plenty of which are readily, cheaply available) , it can easily make as much or more power inch for inch than the vast majority of SBC I and II motors out there and even run with LS1/6's. So, again , dont be so quick to judge.

Even the newer 4.6's are much more respectable than most of us admit without really looking or understanding. The DOHC 4v Cobra mod 4.6's can make over 500 rwhp naturally aspirated with under 318 cid. Stock 96 Cobras with a Vortech, hpipe, MAF, custom tune , power pipe can make 450 rwhp pretty easily, those things LOVE forced induction. Their heads when heavily worked can flow over 320 cfm on the intake side!! There blocks are very strong as are there stock forged steel cranks. They can safely rev very high with the DOHC's.........again , dont be so quick to judge.

Dont get me wrong , I love Vettes too and generally can outrun most Stangs I come across. Just dont lose respect for them , because they really dont deserve it. They are formidable adversaries when set up and driven well , as well as being cheap and alot of fun. Their chassis are very antiquated but sturdy and cheap/easy to mod, but still no match for the purpose built sports cars that our Vettes are.....

Sorry for the soap box , but hope you learned some stuff....... :seeya

Man, that is impressive! What rear gears do you have?

Wait a minute. I just read one of your other posts. Is your car a 6-speed? Those times sound like an LT4 car to me.

It's a 96 CE 6 speed, with the LT4 of course. It's BONE stock, with 3.45 gears. It sure surprised the hell out of me.

Yeah - that would be quite impressive for an LT1 - but damn those LT4s run strong!

As far as the mustang goes, there are a few around west michigan, the fastest, daily driven, NA, small block one is running a 302 SMALL BLOCK CHEVY! :D :yesnod:  I helped him put it together(we are two die hard chevy guys out to proove a point); 1965, 327 block(small journal),4" bore, a 1960 283 crank(small journal) 3" stroke. We used the rods from the 327, bought a used set of 302(11:1) pistons at a swap meet for $80., a used solid flat tappet(.570 lift with 1.6 rockers/274 dur) cam and lifters for $75. Bought the 60 chevy truck(crank donor) and 65 biscane(block donor) from a farmer for $100. Had the crank turned for $65. Bought a re ring kit for 327 $189., used Edelbrock Performer RPM alum. heads,$650. Edelbrock Scorpion intake $50, and a used 700dp holley $100. We did all the engine work, except crank grind, I ported the heads and intake as well as moded the carb. We put in a B/W super T10 $300, a used lakewood scatter shield(required lots of mods) $70, I had a old racing clutch/pp/flywheel, and had to customize the headers from his monza to work in the mustang. The mustang is a 1979, the guy he bought it from was building it for drag racing, came with a 9"/4.56 gears installed, a fibreglass cowl hood, centerline wheels, skinny fronts/10" rear hoosier quick times. It was listed in the paper as a 1979 mustang, drag car project. must sell $1000. or best offer. Divorce forces sale. We went to look at it, laid down $800, and brought it home! :D This was a major project, but was worth it. After almost 14 months, he fired it up. To date, he has run a best of 10.96@120.3! That was the first full throttle pass. He had launched it hard before letting off early running low 12's, and launched easy and not full throttle until 3rd gear running high 12's just to get a feel for the car. He was told to not return until all NHRA safety rules were met for running 10.99 and quicker. He hasn't gone back yet, we won't be able to install the roll cage until later this winter, early next spring. But he has yet to run another NA 5.0 mustang on the street that has beet him. So far all the mustang guys say that it is the narliest 302 they have ever run up against, and then get :mad :mad :mad when the hood goes up and they see the bright orange SBC! :D  We actually had a couple of them ask us what aftermarket company makes a 302 ford with the distributor in the back!   We did prove our point, a 10 second, NA, 5.0 mustang for under $4000. It's not painted yet, but so far it has cost less than $3000.!
