My friend has decided to enjoy his Ruby a bit more by doing some drag racing. He would like to know which clutch and pressure plate combo to go with also he would like to add headers too, again info on that would be appreciated. Lastly would he have to do anything to his programming? He just wants to race it a few times a year, not going for anything wild as he wants to still cruise around in it. I have advised him to join the Forum to learn all about his C4 Thanks for any suggestions
Assuming this is a ZF6 transmission, right? What I am learning the hard way is that for stock-style pull-type diaphragm clutches, none of the replacement pressure plates are good. They are all made in China with substandard diaphragm springs and castings that seem to leave the legs that bolt to the flywheel at different heights. All companies are basing their kits on these inferior plates because that's all that's available. Of these, perhaps Centerforce is a little better - I have heard from multiple people who have had good luck with their Dual Friction kit. 20 years ago, a friend who worked in a speed shop said they had a 100% failure rate with those because the little weights they add to the fingers would come off. One hopes they have improved that aspect of their product by now.
The original US-built and Brazil-built Valeo plates were good, but haven't been made in over a decade. If he can find one of those, that's the way to go. He could check with Jim at Powertorquesystems.com. If not, is his current pressure plate the original unit? If so, it may be okay to resurface, and that would be preferable to a new Chinese unit. Again, Jim knows how to do this so I would ask him. If you go this route, I know Jim would recommend the Centerforce Dual Friction disk to go with it.
Last big question: does he still have his stock dual-mass flywheel? If so, that may not be able to be resurfaced. And you can't buy those new, either. Again, check with Jim to see if he has any in stock. But if not and it can't be reused, then your friend will be switching to a single-mass flywheel. The transmission will get louder, especially if the flywheel gets lighter, but that isn't harmful.
Edit: an alternative to the OE-style solutions above is to get a RAM push-style conversion kit that uses their hydraulic throwout bearing. Supposedly their single-disk organic disks make that a streetable option.

all parts are stock ac delco...original flywheel. everything worked great until he took it to the drags and it slipped like crazy....he seems to have gotten the racing bug somewhat again...I have a centerforce in my C2 and it works great, so I told him to look up that unit for his car...I will now tell him to check the flywheel...I have the feeling the best thing for him to do is rerplace everything...flywheel, disc and pressure plate ...get a set of long tube hedders and put 410s in it and stop there.
