The usual procedure is to replace the front Y with a mandrel-bent unit and the stock main cat with a hi-flow 3-stage cat. These two mods result in more HP and a "sportier" sound.

Re: Removing Cats/Precats? (FlyboyZR1)
It's mandrel bent, but could use some clean up at the Y joint. I had to return mine as it did not fit. However, have not heard complaints about this recently.
I just replaced mine with a kit from Eckler's, no precats. So far, so good. I've had it on for over a month with no problems. It is louder, but I like it. Oh, I also passed Illinois emissions with it. Do it! :chevy

I had no trouble from the Ecklers front 'Y'. It will give you a louder sound in a good way and you also might start getting the dreaded code 32 at highway speeds.
I retained the stock Y pipe and had the pre cats removed and replaced with "test pipes" when I had the high flow cat installed. I do have the dreaded code 32 from time to time.
