Newbie here. I have two 1992 C4s (one is for sale but that's another topic) one of them is having issues which I've traced to the ECM (swapped ECMs and issues transferred to the other car).
As I'm sure everyone here is aware these ECMs are like hens teeth, very difficult to find. My question is can the ECM from a 1991; p/n 12277727, be interchanged for p/n 16159278 if the PROM is changed?
I had read that elsewhere that the two ECMs were very similar.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I thought I'd ask anyway.
They are not interchangeable. What is wrong with the ECM? If it is an intermittent issue there are places that can easily repair it.
When I use the paper clip method to retrieve codes I get ERR on Mod 4. Like I said when I swapped the ecm with the other car the problem transferred to the other car as well. Hard start, rough running, Service Engine and ASR lights.
Do you know specifically what error on module 4? Has this ECM always had the problem or is it a new problem? It could have the wrong MEMCAL in it. Do both of your '92s have the same transmission?

New problem (both cars are new to me; vehicle 1 owned since Mar. 2016, 98k miles; vehicle 2 since Aug. 2016, 34k miles), both are Automatic Trans. The problem started on vehicle 2 and transferred to vehicle 1 when I swapped the ECMs, I did not swap the PROMs.
OK, so I just got an offer on the vehicle with the Service Engine/ASR lights on, buyer is taking it knowing the lights are on. Should I swap the PROMs before I let it go?

I would check and just see that it is a factory PROM/MEMCAL and make sure it is seated fully in the socket. You can also mention to the purchaser that places like SIA Electronics can fix most ECM issues, however they will not fix MEMCAL issues.
