Just received new weatherstrip from Ekler's. I've now read that GM weatherstrip is prefered to the aftermarket stuff, but I figure since I have it on hand its worth a try. My current strip is sticking out from the side of the rear glass like a hockeystick.
Anyway, I've never replaced the rear hatch weatherstrip and I'd love anyone who's successfully accomplished this as of late to walk me through the process. Thanks!
Its the simplest one to fix...Cut the old one off...At this point you may want to clean and wax what you couldn't access before...Then take off the pistons. Prop it up with a 2x4 or something (DON'T let it fall) then just fit the new one on...Its friction fit...no need for adhesive. Put the piston supports back on. That is it...be careful when you close the rear window for a while ...press it gently
A generous application of GooGone will remove the old adhesive. Then you can clean everything up. To Install: Start at the 2 corners, and make sure the weatherstrip is well seated there. Then move toward the middle of both loops.
After the new strip is in, and the window supports reattached, give the new rubber a good application of Armor All, or your other favorite protectant.
I would not recommend putting Armor All on any of the weatherstripping. From what I understand, it will eat through the "skin" of the weatherstripping and that's what accelerates it's deterioration. There is also some grease that the rear weatherstripping "rides" on and is needed for proper operation. Check some past posts. Some people have accidently removed this grease when reinstalling their weatherstripping and found out that the rear glass now tears into the weatherstipping causing holes :mad or it rips the ends and causes leaks. :mad
