I'd think you would remove the belt from the alternator and see if the "whine" is still present.

Or, perhaps a ground is breaking down from corrosion, blocking good contact. recall, the circuit is a loop and not all noise stems from the power side.
That capacitor may or not help, but as another posted, find out the source first, by the process of elimination.
Your task is easier with a factory system, that was not a whiner originally.

This car has sat in storage for a while I will look in to the corrosion issues. It also gets a lot of scratch sound when I slide the bass& treble adjustments. Witch I thought is corrosion also.
