I am going to do a tune up over the winter. I will replace plugs, air cleaner, etc. The existing includes an Accel HEI Super Coil 140005. When I bought the car it included extra Accel wires, NGK plugs, but no extra distributor cap, rotor and coil. In doing research both here and on the web it seems to me that for someone that just drives on the street there is no real gain using something like the Accel 140005. I do not go to the track and have some fun with the car but don't usually push it too hard. I have no problem getting this stuff but I don't want to be that guy that has all these little extras and never uses them, if you know what I mean.
Love the car and love this forum. I am basically a newbie vette owner and looking for some advice...
Upgrading the coil make sure your grd is good and since the coil grd thru the dist and the dist thru w/e it touches. MSD said one of their common HEI dist problems is bad grd thru alum intakes because alum corrodes so fast and it's corrosion doesn't conduct unlike copper. That's why msd's own HEI version has a dedicated grd. Also in my research long ago I read about a guy who had problems after installing an Accel hei super coil and he resolved it by grounding the dist. I believe this is why so many had problems with the super coil and since it was more popular than others..... Getting back to grd you may think well it's not just the intake it touches, well that is true but iron/steel conducts very poorly is also oil covered.
The HEI has screws inside for a few things and some go all the way thru & are threaded, I like to get a longer screw that sticks outside(under) and then attach a dedicated grd wire with a nut.
