I just purchased a 1985 and the check engine light stays on. I bought a Haynes Manual but it doesn't say anything about what causes the light to be on. Simlarly the Brake light on the instrument panel stays on. The engine oil is full and clean. The brakes feel good. Any help in diagnosing these problems will be appreciated. [IMG][/IMG]
dacarlto,
the Haynes manual actually has a decent description of the computer control system (chapter 6 in mine --- "Emission Control Systems" )
the Check Engine lamp indicates that the computer is, or possibly has been, detecting a fault.
the computer is capable of displaying to you what the fault is/are. do a search for "fault codes" and you'll find a gazillion threads on the subject.
find the ALDL (Assembly Line Diagnostic Link) and jumper terminals A and B, then turn your ignition "ON" without starting the engine. the Check Engine lamp should then present Fault Codes to you, in the form of a repeating flashing sequence - count the flashes, write them all down and then report to your Haynes or to here.
try the "paper-clip" trick for diagnosis. Someone here will post pics for you soon, as they did for me. Also, your Sig pic, URL isn't showing up. You may want to test it in the Testing section. Welcome to the forum. You will find out soon that these guys know everything there is to know, about Corvettes. :)
I pulled the code using a paper clip. Its a code 43 which has to do with a knock sensor. I posted a question about the knock sensor onthe ECM forum. If anyone sees this, any help with the knock sensor will be appreciated.
