I have an 85 c4 corvette and I am wanting to know what I can do to the rear end to make it race ready, I am pushing about 800 horsepower and have no idea what I can do to make the rear end strong enough to hold up to the power without twisting an axle. It has independent suspension.
I would think that if you had someone smart enough and mechanically inclined enough to figure out how to get 800hp out of the motor and into a transmission strong enough to take it, the rear end should be pretty easy to figure out.
What are your plans for the car? If its a drag car you want, I would think replacing the rear end all together would be the way to go with that kind of HP.
The '85 came from the factory with either a Dana 36(automatic) or a Dana 44(manual trans), neither of which will stand up long to 800 horsepower. Frankly even the Dana 44 (stronger of the two) will not live long at the 500 horsepower level if you are not very careful how you apply it.
antfarmer's comment may have been a bit harsh, but to utilize all 800 horsepower with good traction, your options are going to be either a straight axle conversion or something like RideTech's Ford 9" IRS... https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...s-in-a-c3.html
