just curious on this - more down the road thinking. any reason these wouldn't be a "plug and play" set of heads for an iron head L98 tuned port? for the price of these, it's not worth running the OE 624 castings through a machine shop. not looking so much for any performance upgrade, and not interested in aluminum. from the reviews, it looks like these are dart heads sold as summit racing. application data says thru 86, so, any issues?

What size chambers are your stock heads? I expect 76cc iron (624 heads you say). Yea going tighter chambers will bump your compression and test your engine for detonation.
Better choice would be World Products Torquer II w/76cc chambers or a set of aluminum heads with 64cc chambers. Edelbrock makes good quality heads for reasonable price.
My '84 also had the 624 heads, which I replaced with a set of 993 iron heads. My 624's cracked. Both have 76cc chambers and the same size valves, but the 993's have better ports. I need to pass CA smog tests, so I didn't want to go high compression. The 993's also have the exhaust "crossover" ports that I needed for my EGR. Not all heads have these ports! I rebuilt the 993's with the valve stem seals and exhaust valve rotators like my 624's had. I found my 993's on CL for $50 for the pair! Here's an interesting vid:

Go to a reputable machine shop (not necessarily the most expensive !!!) explain your situation and ask what it would cost to have your present heads magnafluxed and rebuilt. Then you can determine dollar for dollar, which way you want to go.

I really don't have a situation and not looking to replace anything in the near future, but i'd bet you can easily drop close to 5-bills on cleaning, pressure testing, magnaflux, (16) valve guides, and a 3-angle cut. not sure it's worth it on OE 462624 castings (which differ from 458624's in the video). for what the summit replacements cost, I'm thinking, if the day ever comes, the summit heads just may fit the bill. I would also think to take full advantage out of the summit assemblies, some intake porting/gasket matching and a set of headers would also be in order. AGAIN, just thinking here....
