The power window was working for as long as I have had the car, until a few weeks ago when I realized that it would no longer roll down. All the window does now is make a loud grinding noise, is the problem the motor, actuator, or something worse? This is the driver's side door by the way.

I've opened up the door panel many times before, how do I go about finding out if the regulator is ok? Once the panel is off.
Once you separate the motor from the regulator, you will be able to test independently.
You can test the motor by once removing it from the mounts, push the up/down button. With no resistance from the regulator, it should spin pretty freely. If not, you motor is jacked.
With the motor un attached, test your regulator by grabbing the glass and freely move it up and down in the channels with very little resistance. If there is resistance, you need to do some adjusting and lubricating.
