Default Front suspension questions

Had my '88 up on some stands today. Decided I would give my front end the "wheel bearing check", where you grab top and bottom of wheel and try to find play. No problem when hands were in the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. While I was doing this, I figured I would check the play in the steering. Seems I have about 3/4 of and in of play in my steering. Is this normal?

I had my girlfriend come out and help, and she moved it around while I was under the car, and the tie rod ends look good, no play there. It looked like the shaft going into the rack and pinion unit had some play on the rack end. Couldn't really see, since the boot was still there in good condition.

On some bumps, it seems like my front suspension "wiggles" from side to side. One bump in particular on my way to work does this. Pavement drops about 1.5 inches from a repaving job, onto a cement bridge. The pavement drop/change is right at an expansion joint, so it is a little more pronounced. It is a sweeping uphill left for an overpass, and the car just seems really unsettled over that particular bump. I'm assuming that my condition is what necessitated the camber brace from rd-racing. As soon as I am able, I am going to acquire one of these.

Sorry it was so long. Thanks for your help.

With the car on the ground-wiggle the steering wheel-is there slack in the tierods/rack then? Otherwise the handling may just be alignment.
