Winter Project: Intake Replacement....what else while we're down there?
This winter will see the replacement of my stock intake, plenum and runners with TPiS Big Mouth intake, Siamese Runners and a Ported Plenum. Obviously alot off the top of the engine will be removed to do this. Also, I know this will be labor intensive; especially since I'm paying someone else to do it. However, is there anything else I could do that's not terribly expensive while the intake system is off?

Not really. The only other thing is the roller lifters but at 59K they should be just fine. Why did you choose the siameese runners? I like the ASM runners myself. I used to have a set. They looked stock and fit very well.
You should really consider a cam swap while your that far in it. It would really bring that whole system together. With the intake system you are thinking of and mild Crane cam, I made 270 hp to the wheels which is about 320 flywheel. Car really ran nice but at 4800 it was all done.
Here is a picture from 1999 when I had that set up.

Being in that far the valve covers would be rather easy to remove, time wise.
If you aren't going to do a cam soon you might install a set of 1.6:1 ProMagnums, new valve springs and lower seals.
Oh, have your mechanic splice an entension into the Grn wire comming behind the oil pressure sw to bring the EGR Temp Sw connector up to the right of the dist. Later if you have EGR problems and need to change that sw the connector will be accessable.

Jason, it looks like I found someone willing to sell me their AS&M runners to use with the TPiS Big Mouth Intake and ported plenum. Would it be wise to upgrade the throttle body to a 52mm or wouldn't that make any difference?
I'm thinking hard about swapping the cam, but being such a newbie, I don't know what replacement parts I need, where I can get them and for how much. If you (or anybody for that matter) can give me ideas, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Re: Winter Project: Intake Replacement....what else while we're down there? (fast90)
The cam I used was a Crane cam part number 104-224. The lift was .452/.465 with 1.5 rockers and the duration was 214/220 on a 112 deg LSA. I liked the cam alot. Had a slight lope at idle and had not driveability concerns. A cam swap can be expensive if you have someone do it. I believe that on a 90, you have to remove the AC condenser. If you have R12 in your system, its very expensive to put back in. You would probably be better off converting to R134a. Your best bet may be to install a set of Crane narrow body roller rockers with a 1.6:1 ratio. Another tip I can give you is buy a can of valve cover paint from Mid America. Repaint your valve covers, ASM runners and plenum. It will make your motor look wonderful and stock. I'd also stick with the stock throttle body for now. I'm not sold on the bigger TB deal. So for a recap, I suggest.
Intake as you are doing.
1.6 roller rockers
Repaint covers, runners and plenum.
If you have some extra cash, put a set of good headers on.
Re: Winter Project: Intake Replacement....what else while we're down there? (89vette)
Gotcha! It now makes a little more sense what 65Z01 said above. I think I'll pass on the cam swap afterall. I don't race the car anyways. Is there a lot of labor hours involved in putting new rockers in place of the old ones with new seals and springs? Also, would the new rockers and intake give me a noticeable power increase?
Re: Winter Project: Intake Replacement....what else while we're down there? (fast90)
The Crane Narrow Body self aligning roller rockers are much like those GM used on the LT4's. You will not have to change the springs. You will have to grind the oil drippers a little on the inside to clear the rockers. You should pick up a nice chunk of power with your mods. I did make a mistake before though. The dyno at 270 RWHP was with CNC ported L98 heads and headers also.

Would you happen to have a part number for what you're suggesting? I have the latest Summit catalog, but i don't see anything about Crane Narrow Body self aligning roller rockers. How is it these new roller rockers will give me more power?
Also, take a look at my current mods. Figure in that I'm getting the new intake setup and roller rockers. Next summer might get headers. Will the stage II chip that I bought from Fastchip be sufficient or will I need to get a custom chip. Or would you suggest having it dyno-tuned once all these future mods are installed?
So, the rockers are all I will need to replace? Need not worry about new seals and springs? What about pushrods and guide plates? Ugh...so confusing. It's issues like these that make me wish I hung around a car garage when I was growing up :D
I will be patient. I just want to get all my ducks in a row before I take the car in for service this winter. I won't even have my new intake components until sometime next month anyways.
Re: Winter Project: Intake Replacement....what else while we're down there? (fast90)
hey Fast90, you have the EXACT same mods as me, minus the upgraded PROM. ever been to the track with that combo? if so, what are you running? i just wanted to compare times with similarly modded cars. i havent been able to tune the combo i have yet, but i should have it down in a few weeks. just want to know what to expect

I've never had it to the track. The previous owner had it there and said he ran a 13.89 @ 99.8mph. I guess that's possible if he was a good driver. I'd be lucky to stay in the 14's
I'd be interested to hear how you made out. I suppose that sometime next summer, I'd like to head to a track and see how I make out.
Re: Winter Project: Intake Replacement....what else while we're down there? (ld85)
fast90, are you expecting an large increase in HP with the parts you will be bolting on being just the intake, runners and plenum?
A large increase? No. I have no idea whether I'll feel any increase in power with the intake components and new roller rockers. If anything, it can't hurt performance, especially since the stock intake on the L98 is ill-suited. From what I have read on the forum, there's a good chance that I should feel a noticeable gain.
Re: Winter Project: Intake Replacement....what else while we're down there? (fast90)
One thing I changed while I had my intake off was an AFPR. This is is made by Holley. If your not planning on heading to the track you may want to forgo this
I painted my valve covers with POR15 high-temp engine paint. It is brushed on and "wets-out" nicely. Here are before/after and present pics of my valve covers.
