Only thing I could think of if it's like the earlier cars is there's a cable mechanism on the automatic columns that links up with the auto shifter assembly. I think the old 4+3 cars also had the cable assembly as well but the ZF cars don't.

Column lock and key release hardware. Which is your car now? An M6 or A4. An A4 column to an M6 car is much easier and not an issue but an M6 column to an A4 car and do it correctly is a task. Do you have the key resistance aspect of VATS defeated now or does VATS operate as OE?

Could be made to work I believe with little effort. You would need to remove your cylinder complete with the wire(down the column) to reuse. That can be a nuisance for some. This would allow you to retain the "depress button" for key removal and use your current keys. The park-lock for the A4 I believe is easily defeated/removed OR maybe just left as is. I've never looked but might have a column to check.

If you did a resistance by-pass then you could use the keys supplied with the column and loose the column lock function OR maybe just have keys cut with the correct resistance to match the mechanical cuts for rotation of cylinder and loose the column lock feature.

Can you put a "hands on" for the column before you do the buy? I'd think that might be important. Maybe use the "I need an M6 BUT I could maybe consider the A4" if the price were right using the what's required as a conversation point!
