It won't do them any good to rip out the cylinder because the resistor value is sent to a module behind the dash. Until this module sees the correct resistance, the car will not start. You can do what you are suggesting, many corvette parts suppliers sell VATS bypass modules which plug in under the steering column. I replaced my ignition cyliner lock, and it wasn't that hard.
