i was wondering if anyone knows if the 85 has the anti theft thing?Where the signal to starter is not sent for 4 minutes when the the key is not recognized.
Yes it has one.. I disabled mine like right after getting it, as it used to go off all the time..As I recall there is a relay or fuse or something behind the info panel on the dash.. I had to take that out and then I disabled the VATS.
My '85 has factory alarm, but no special coded keys or 'starter-disable' function. I believe horn sounds for approxiomately 3 minutes, & I'm not sure if it cuts out the fuel pump power or not, I'll check my owners manual and post back if no other posts address it.
One might call that a VATS...Vehicle Anti-Theft System....I know it is not the VATS as everyone knows it. Nobody pays any attention to the noisy car alarms any more, as they sound off so frequently...
It has a "Theft Deterent Module" or TDM. It is activated my using the power lock switch then closing the door. It is deactivated by using the key to unlock the door. To test it, roll down the driver window. Open the door, press the power lock button, and close the door. Reach in and slide the unlock lever then open the door. The horn should go off. Put key in door lock to stop it.
I am willing to bet you if my 84 has a starter interupt ...so does yours...its behind the multiuse panel (under the AC vents)

well, my horn is disconnected so i cant check it that one way. Also my driver side door lock doesnt work so i open the passenger side with the key and press the unlock button to open the driver side door.... i asked in the first place because sometimes my car doesnt start and i have to disconnect then reconnect the battery
If that is your problem, I would think it is the door arm switches or lock cylinder switches. Untill you get it fixed, so you do not get stranded someplace. I would disconnect the factory alarm. (under the pass hush pad) (don't disconnect the ECM that is right next to it) You can also remove the fuse behind the multiuse panel.
I stand corrected, as others have stated...THe 85 does indeed have the starter interupt.
To quote from the '85 owner's manual..."THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM...The Electronic Theft Deterrent System has been designed to not only protect the passenger compartment contents, but to offer an extra degree of protection to the vehicle itself when the system is properly armed.
The system alarm pulsates the vehicle's horn at a rate of 50 cycles per minute. At the same time the alarm is triggered, the starter interupt relay is energized which disables the starter solenoid circuit.
In order to conserve the vehicle battery power, the horn shuts off after three to seven minutes of operation and re-arms. However, once triggered, the starter interupt relay will remain energized by the controller until the system has been properly disarmed."
Sorry about the inaccurate information from my first post....
No VATS on 85. I believe VATS started in 86. 85 does not recognize the key. I do believe it disables the starter when the alarm is activated, but it has nothing to do with the key. Guy

'86 was first year for VATS. After replacing the key and cylinder, it is 100% reliable, too. I don't know why anyone would want to bypass a system like that which is still effective today and way ahead of its time in '86.
Nope, the '85 Vette doesn't have that, it started in '86. If you look at your key it does NOT have that little plastic back oval with the metal line going though it on the key. If I remember right, there are like 8 diferent codes so when you get a duplicate key made you have to match the code as well as the key. The alarm does disable the starter, until one of the door are unlocked with door key, but it has nothing to do with the engine key. :D

So they changed the naming convention from 84-85 to 86+ models. All that matters is that there IS a VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft system) no matter what it's called. Only difference is that the 86+ uses a special key, and pre 86 uses a different system with starter disable. It used to leave me in the dust a few times before I disabled it..
I had a lot better real alarm installed anyways after. :smash:

while we're on that subject... has anybody bypassed the resistor in the key with a fixed value resistor in the steering harness to bypass that feature....it seems that if somebody wants to swipe my car, they're going to rip out the ignition lock anyway. i need to get a set of spare keys for wife unit but i'm not up to giving the dealer 50 bucks when i can do it for 65 cents. just a thought...
