Well as some of you know I am gonna be swapping my engine for a 406. The Dana 36 with 3.07:1 gears will be VERY shortlived trying to deliver what that engine will have to offer.
Were is the best place to pick up a rebuilt or new unit. I hate to buy a used one, unless from a reputable memeber, due to the fact I don't want leaks etc to contend with after its put in.
Mr Mojo recommended Contemporary Corvette(I believe ask for Ron) and they're on the $ for price. don't quote me, but I believe it's a thousand bucks for the housing, bat wing and c beam. Just take your current auto driveshaft and pop the front yoke on to a six speed shaft and you're good to go.
Here's what I have learned about the Dana 44 rearend.
A new carrier with clutch packs and new spider gears runs about 180 bucks. The rest of the internals are 110 bucks which includes bearings, shims and seals. Some new snap rings may also be required. The pinion yolk is about 25 to 30 bucks. Obviously, you'll have to buy the gears as well.
There are four places that a Dana 44 will leak. The vent if the top is missing. The case if the sealer or bolts are not on right. The pinion yolk. A new one will fix this problem.
The tricky one is the output axels - you should check them carefully if you are buying used unit. The housing must be opened and the snap rings holding the output axels have to be removed. Then check for grooves on the axels where the seals touch the shafts. It helps to have a rear end expert check these out to know how much wear is too much. They can cost up to $175 a piece to replace. The whole rear end has to be removed to replace them if they start leaking too.
If you buy one that has been rebuilt, ask them about the condition of the axels. I did my rearend a few months ago and found some grooves on mine that had 70k miles. I put in new seals and lightly sanded the seal surfaces and have not had any leaks so far. The pinion yolk had much deeper grooves and I replaced it but it rotates 2.6 to 4.11 times faster than the pinion yolk.
Keep in mind that the vette has a special heavy duty version of the Dana 44. Good Luck.

call Zip or go to the forum mall I thing that is the lowest price of a rebuild dana 44 on the market I had ever seen !!
Yeah, but you still need a core.
Vic
Call Ron at Contemporary, his price is $1400 for the carrier, the cover, the driveshaft and the driveline support. Another place to try is www.partsforvettes.com
I bought a used D-44 from Contemporary with 39,000 miles, no leaks at all.
He gives a 30 day warranty I believe(not exactly sure).
2K is for a brand new one with a new cover. I know vette2vette just bought some original pullouts which means they only have a few miles on them. Try giving them a call for one. $1400 for a used diff is too much. It only cost $1695 for a rebuilt one including the core charge with new gears. So if you buy a used one for $1400 you think 2k is high on a brand new one (no used parts) with a new cover.
I have a question; when you install a different axel ratio on an automatic MAD includes the speedo gears. They don't for the manual transmission vettes. What do you need to do for the manuals (6 speeds) to keep the ECM and speedo happy?
just curious
