Never had a 4+3 before so I'm not sure whats normal. This one has the OD button on the shifter, which the previous owner said is where it should have been anyway. Anyway I was driving at night when I was vigorously passing some ricer guy and I heard metal type of sound like a spring or something coming off or breaking. I thought not too much about it because everything seemed to work fine after that. The next morning I noticed the the button was not quite seated and it has gotten worse since. It is still functional but is a little annoying when shifting. I have tried to see how it was supposed to be and I can see two female clips on the underside of the plastic button. The problem is that there is an "L" shaped piece of metal which doesn't allow the button to sit down all the way. I have tried to push this metal piece down but it only moves a bit. So far I have considered using a hammer to try and punch it down but I don't want to damage anything I haven't already messed up. Any ideas or comments would be helpfull.
Directly under the button there is a "T" shaped rod going down to the base of the shifter; the two front clips of the button should fit in this "T".
At the back, the button also has two clips; they fit in the **** itself. There is a steel wedge at this end of the cavity; it should be fully seated (*don't* hammer it in!) so it doesn't come out.
Pretty much any more inspection will require removing the console top, which requires removing the glove box lid, radio & A/C fascia, and dash gauge fascia...A laborious process, but necessary to get to the switch and spring (optional) which is located at the base of the shifter.
And which may very well have come loose, or even popped apart...Luckily, it's a cheap switch, and readily available from Newark Electronics...
