Hey guys, going to change my trans fluid this week. Trans was rebuilt May 2015, and filled with Dexron 3. I've only put 4k miles, but I want to change it because I am weird like that. Should I flush it? Or just drain, new filter and refill? Stick with the Dexron 3 fluid?
Something else I just remembered - the filter has a thick o-ring/seal on the tube that slides up into the trans. Sometimes it sticks inside the trans so use a hook pick to get it out, can't install the new filter when it's stuck in there.
Bought the filter today from the Chevy dealer. Same part numbers as Joe C linked. I could only find Dexron -III fluid. Is that Ok? On the bottle, it says it will work for GM cars. Haven't started the job, but will tomorrow. And for a future reference to anyone doing this, this exhust bolt will be in the way of one of the trans pan bolts. I assume I'll be able to just loosen it, and move out of the way. Pic
I had to move the clamp too just took a little PB blaster to get the nut moving
if the DEX -III is a known brand it should be fine
GM stopped licensing DEX-III several years back and now each company is free to make what they want and call it DEX-III compatible
when they were licensing it GM would verify the chemical makeup
Hey guys. Filter came out with the o ring. Though I will double check to see if any o ring is still in. As far as putting the filter back in, I just lube the o ring and push it till it no longer is able to move upward?
My 1996 Corvette GM shop manual has 97 INCH POUNDS of torque for the transmission bolts. Buy a INCH POUND torque wrench, lots of Corvette bolts use INCH POUNDS, valve cover bolts and oil pan bolts.

Oh and the filter I removed says "made in China"
was that the original OE filter? seems to me, the GM/delco service replacements are made in the USA -

- a small, dedicated, inch-pounder is a must for pan/VC work where, equalizing the clamping force of the hardware is a must. smaller specialty, units seem to have better accuracy than their big brother counterparts -

best I can tell, it looks like it's installed correctly.
