The bottom nut was unscrewed- ugh, no gas came out. Couldn't take out the bracket- so tried to work around it: managed to slightly untighten the top- there was fuel there. Now I can't seem to be able to remove the filter. I think the gas is out- it wasn't much. Is there an easier way to get the darned filter off? Any help - totally appreciated.
it's been some time since I've done an LT-1 car, but as I remember, I broke loose the fuel filter's inlet fitting first, then disconnected the fuel line at the engine, and dropped the filter and fuel-line assembly down - enough to access the filter's outlet fitting. I don't remember how the bracket is configured, but if it's anything like my 90 L98 car, there is a single M6 bolt.
some folks say to disconnect the filter inlet fitting, and the engine's fuel line and pull the filter/line up through the engine bay and replace the filter at the workbench. reverse to install. I had absolutely no luck doing it that way. good luck....
I did my 95 by loosening the inlet, removed the bracket. I then put a 20mm wrench on the inlet side and 16mm wrench on the outlet side, used the 20 to loosen and get the filter out.
I wanted to take the bracket but the fuel lines are sitting on top of that bracket. I've tried to spread them enough to get the bolt out.. I just didn't want have a worse problem . I saw a few YouTube videos- it really didn't seem to be THAT difficult. Anyone know how much leeway I have to move those lines? As everyone knows- not a whole lotta room.

the fuel line that is interfering with the filter bracket is the return line. follow it forward and back and check for any mounting clips nearby, securing the lines to the frame. you may have to remove some of these clips to get some movement in the return fuel line so you can access the bracket /bolt. as i said, it's been a few years, but I don't recall any issues. here's a pic of the 92-93 fuel lines - note #22 tie-strap, and #14 fuel line clip. loosening and removing these item should allow some additional movement in the return fuel line. hope this helps and again, good luck on the repair.
There is also a clip in the engine compartment that may help with some movement, I think it is #62 in the illustration. Be careful with it, it is plastic.
