I am getting a horrible whine coming from the front of the engine...its intermittent and happens when the car is warm and when at idle. When it starts it is extremely loud. I can hear it from inside the car. I had the hood open yesterday and it was so loud i got nervous and had to shut the car off....i'm having the serpentine belt changed and zf fluid changed tomorrow. I tried to pinpoint the noise and it looks like its coming from the center and bottom of engine....its a loud rubbing/vibrating noise. do you think its the belt? Its the original and the car is a '92. It has 19,500 miles on it. Please help
Could be the belt. What you describe sounds like a traditional loud gear drive timing setup. However you can't put a loud gear drive on an LT1 and given the miles and that it has never done it to you before I could assume that's not it.
You said the whine does change dependent on RPM right?
its more of a rubbing/vibrating sound and happens at idle. I'm not sure if it does it while i'm cruising its too loud, but like i said at idle it was scary enough that i immediately shut the car down...
Get a mechanics stethoscope at Pepboys and place the end of the rod on all the front engine components to isolate the grind/vibration. You'll know it immediately!!! It'll scare the crap out of you!! Check power steering fluid level too. Could be a/c pulley, or idler tensioner pulley. My idler pulley made alot of noise before I changed it, especailly when on start up.
Good luck,
I had the car fixed today! It was the water pump. The bearing was shot. I got lucky because it wasn't leaking so the opti was OK. I also had the tranny serviced. I used the GM stuff and it has made a HUGE difference. It is much smoother now. Thanks for the help!
