Fan doesn't Turn On
For some reason the electric fan isn't turning on.
Was working fine before. Had the headers done and the mechanic there said my temp sensor broke into couple pieces so that needed to be replaced. They had to order it and it's getting put in next week. I haven't driven it much since I had the headers done.

Think I figured it out. The sensor that needs to be replaced is the one of the passenger side which is the sensor that sends info to turn the fan on. Im getting a new one put in next week.

The sensor on the passenger side is for the aux fan and not the main fan. Which fan is not turning on? If the main fan is not turning on it is unrelated to the sensor on the passenger side that is broke and you need to chase down the problem. (The computer controls the main fan, and it is set to turn on at 228 degrees F., at least from the factory)

Now your user ID hints '84 but if the car is anything "other than" it needs sorted.
Did you ever change the switch to a lower temp control?

Yes the cooling fan switch for an '84 is in the rear right cylinder head. I believe that your only concern needs to be is that the shop understands which switch you actually need. I'd confirm with the shop what/which was ordered and I'd maybe be concerned about the connector that's used in that location with the "fan switch". I'd try to get ahead of this!!

If the OP is talking about his '84 there's no AUX fan. It wasn't an option.

Yes, I will call them this morning. When I had my headers done that switch broke when it came out or when they had to move something. Either way they showed it to me and it was in rough shape. There is no switch in it now. The guy working on my car must of though it was the switch for the temp gage or at lest that's what they told me. I guess there are three switches in the 84' the one for the temp gage is on the drivers side and that looks fine and my temp gage is working.
Yes, my car is an '84.
I've never changed that switch or any switch.

Maybe ask brand and part # that they want to buy and post back here to confirm the application.

TS147 is a Standard Parts brand and changes to those that I'm familiar with here in my vicinity. You most definitely want a new connector to go with it. Where ever they sourced the switch they should be able to also do the connector.
I didn't see any temperature specifications for the "brand" but it's advertised as stock for most of the GM products in the '80s. Expect maybe a wide swing 220° - 238°

Thanks for your help. I'll make sure he gets a new connector. There wasn't much left of the old switch so I don't believe the connector is/was any good.

The 84 has no AUX fan? So what does the sensor between (and just above) spark plugs 8 and 6 do? (it's the thing you wish wasn't there when changing plug 8) Are you saying it's the main fan?
I ask because it has a long unplugged cable in mine.
I'll make my own thread if this isn't answered easily.

That's the cooling fan switch/sensor that turns the fan on/off. That's the one on mine that is no longer there and getting replaced. There is only one fan on the '84. I believe 8'5 and new all had AUX fans.

The factory turn-on and turn-off temperatures for this switch are 238*/201* per my '84 FSM. Here are a few alternatives:
ACDelco D1855: 215*/200*
BWD TFS4: 229*/213*
Wells SW505: 229*/213*
Standard TS-85: unknown (supposedly factory spec)
Standard T147: unknown
All of these switches have the "mushroom top" connectors, which use the same "pinch style" mating connector that is used for the knock sensor and for the a/c pressure switch on the compressor that turns on the radiator fan relay in the '84.
My favorite is the ACDelco. I put an LED light on my dashboard so I can see when the fan comes on. That's a nice "comfort factor". In my opinion, a remote switch is a waste of time! (For more details on the light, just ask. That's not the purpose of this post.)
