has anyone had a problem with the turn signal arm working for one side and
swing free on the other. i went for a ride and on the way home this happened
does it sound like the switch or the arm coming undone in side the steering
arm????  any help would be great thanks jimbo :seeya
You can turn the signal arm left, but can't turn it off unless you turn the wheel left. Moving the turn signal arm up just feels like it is flopping around.
You can move the signal arm up to the right position, it will not work nor stay in position.
It's not that bad. Just make sure that you disconnect the battery when you do it to prevent any problems. The hardest part that I had was trying to get the turn signal stalk (lever) off. It was stuck. But otherwise, it was easy. And on models that have the airbags in the steering wheel, be careful and disarm it before trying to remove it. Overall, it takes about one hour to replace. While you are there, check your bolts that hold the tilt wheel mechanism in place. The bolts frequently come loose. So this is a good time to tighten those too.
Good luck!

I've had the same problem with my '92, however, I found a way to get the right turn signal to still work. Left works normally but when I make a right turn, I lift the end of the turn signal arm towards me about 1/4 to 1/2 inch and then lift it up normally for a right turn. For whatever reason, it works as it is supposed to. It's been doing this for almost two years. When it gives up the ghost, I'll fix it.
I'm on vacation from 10/5 -10/13, so it will have to be after that and before 10/26, so that leaves us the 19th which is mikeg's little PA trip unless we do this on a Sunday.
BBQ in 60 acres! Man that will be a flashback to the '80's!!
I'll be away for 2 days on at a sales meeting in va, but i'll call my mechanic to
get our dates together---email me and we will set it up jimbo :jester
quick heads up on the above turn signal problem----had the steering wheel
removed today and my mechanic had ordered the turn signal switch to replace
what i felt was the culprit---low and behold it is not the turn signal switch that fails, but the wiper/high beam multi switch that breaks--the lighting/wiper switch connects to the turn signal switch with a metal arm which is connected to a plastic ring from your turn signal arm--the plastic ring broke and the multi switch has to be replaced not the turn signal switch------the bad news is the turn signal switch is about $60.00 and the light/wiper multi switch is about $180.00. also no one has it in stock and it takes 1 day from del. from gm--mine should be in tomorrow and i will let you know how it goes----you are looking at about 2 holrs to do the job----thank god my mechanic only charges me $40.00 an hour :yesnod:
one point i'd like to mention if you do the work yourself is that while its not hard to do, there is a spring that needs to be compressed (at least on the '84) with a special tool. i tried for a couple hours unsuccessfully before going out and borrowing the tool - then finished it in 10 minutes.
Just had the exact thing happen last month, and it too was the pivot/pulse assembly shedding its plastic "lip". Wish I read this earlier, could have told you the part number, $102 from Dal at VanDevere.
