So I'm not having problems with the water pump- I know I have to take it off - question: do I really need to replace this? ( it was replaced about 5 years ago along with the thermostat) or is this one of those things you just do because I'm there? BTW I am planning to change the opti & the spark plug wires (and the spark plugs- nervous about this though)
I would change the water pump because I am already there and I don't want it to crap out on me and dump coolant all over my new opti, if it were me. If it was one a couple months ago, fair enough.

Point taken-- you had me at dump coolant all over my new opti...
Tried to start the engine today. It started for a second then died- its like the engine is not getting fuel-- it did that twice... maybe grabbing at straws (or trying hard not to tear apart half the Vette ). Pressed on the gas pedal- and that didn't seem to help. What could cause that and is there an easy fix (probably not- I should have just said fix)?

I don't have any equipment to test/find out what codes are being thrown. I know the injectors are working, haven't checked the spark plugs- though I know they haven't been changed in a while.(4 years)
The mechanic - although experienced with other cars - was NOT familiar with Corvettes and after the Vette was started, started to hose down the engine.... well when it cut off, and wouldn't start again he "washed his hands, the engine started, I'm outta here bs"....
now I'm doing the work (the other choice is to tow it to a trusted shop- but I know that's going to be bank)...
Should I really get to the opti, check it (how?) reassemble the engine, try to start the car, and disassemble the components again if the opti is bad (is this too much whine?)
i want to some day drive her!
This is a tragedy. Not familiar with Corvettes is an understatement. But that’s not the only car the opti is used on. Sorry to say you have been hosed as well as your car and he should be taken to small claims court.
Forget about codes at this point, basic engine troubleshooting needs to be. The engine was running so I'm going to assume the fuel pressure was good and still is OK as well as the spark plugs.
Do you know how to check for spark off the coil and spark plugs when the engine is being turned over by someone else? This is step one and real data that is needed.
Depending on what you find a opti may be needed. Do you have the tools facilities and know how to replace the opti? Do you have any idea of what kind of job it is.
I would make sure there is no water in the connectors for the opti, ICM and any other place that was wet.
Also look at the fuses to make sure all look OK especially the one for the coil #25.

Try this for getting the codes. It seems like a long shot, but this could be an ECM issue. I have a '92 and had an ECM with random problems due to cold solder joints. This is a known issue with some '92-'93 ECMs.
