Default Dana 36 help

I am wanting to buy 3.73 gears for my dana 36 but how do I know if I have a 2.73 & Numerically Lower Carriers or 3.07 & Numerically Higher Carriers.

I am looking at these two gears

I've always thought & been told by old hotrodders that at 70 mph in direct drive (3rd in 700r4) the tach will show your approximate axle ratio. Mine's right at 3000 at 70, my rear gear is a 3.07.

So you have it out? It should have a tooth count on the ring gear.

No car is apart getting a 6 speed swap, rear end is still in the car. Plus the tach LCD on the gauge cluster never worked so I couldn't do it that way. Now I bought all Autometer gauges, no more junk 80's electrical gauge cluster.

You should be able to tell from the RPO codes. On my 1996 G44 indicates a 3.07 rear axle ratio.

you could just rotate the tire or axle and count how many times the pinion spins.

This is certainly the way I'd proceed. One full rotation of the wheel and count the rotations of the pinion.

Not all '84 cars had SPID label. If yours did/does it would be in rear storage compartment. You would still need to confirm it so I'd just do the rotation and count.

An '84 is the "weakest" of all D36 builds. I'd think since it's an ZF M6 build your money would be way better spent purchasing and doing the D44 now. If/when an '84 D36 came apart you had to build the replacement using '85+ parts(carrier/sides/pinions) and short-axles. The ring/pinion, install package and labor is most of the way to the buy of likely a D44. D36 build in your case is less than foolish - I'd say maybe stupid!

Your links took me to the same part#'d gear package.

In what ways are the 84 D36 differnet from the 85 D36?

Mine had a stronger batwing than any other I have seen.

This is my 84 D36 with thich W on each side:

This is what they usually look like with one thin V on each side.

The actual differential carrier/case and it's internal side gears, pinions, shaft and also the short axles are different. Some '84 later production might have the better components but without disassembly you can't tell. The casting number on the actual carrier I believe can be used as an identifier.

I believe that even in '85 the '84 internals were no longer sold. You either bought an assembly or the pieces to assemble.

After breaking the pinion gear I replaced my D36 with a D44. I still have my original half shafts and no problems with them at +700 whp.
The second picture is not mine.
